Bringing whole-person health closer to the communities who need it most

Train local health workers, build Wellness Hubs and bring eye, dental and lifestyle care to underserved islands with Health Mission Institute

Our mission

To establish a network of medical missionary training centers, wellness clinics and community Wellness Hubs that are self-sustaining, locally led and spiritually rooted, sharing Christ’s love through whole-person health.

About Health Mission Institute

More than a mission trip: a multiplying system of care

Health Mission Institute (HMI) is a Christ-centered medical missionary training and service network strengthening health capacity in underserved communities throughout the Pacific and Asia.

Pacific communities face a convergence of chronic disease, diabetes complications, oral disease, preventable vision loss, addictions and geographic isolation. Effective care exists, but the professionals and equipment are rarely where people live.

HMI closes that gap: screen locally, prevent locally, treat what can safely be treated locally, connect complex cases to specialists, and follow patients within their own communities.

“We equip you to increasingly care for your own community, and to equip others.”

    Elena Taneva

Nurse Practitioner · Medical missionary, Guam

Elena is originally from Bulgaria and now lives in Guam, where she works as a medical missionary. She is a Nurse Practitioner with a Master in Global Health from Scotland, UK, a degree in Health Science from the University of Malta, and a second master’s degree from Chamberlain University, Chicago. She is currently finishing her Doctorate in Public Health at Loma Linda University.

Elena currently works in Family Medicine and Urgent Care. She previously led a dedicated team at Priory Hospital in London, one of the world’s leading hospitals in addictions and mental health, an experience that helped her shape the addiction ministry for the Pacific, addressing substances such as kava, betel nut, nicotine, alcohol and methamphetamine.

Her clinical experience spans ICU, CVICU, mental health, surgery, spa management, prison health, podiatry, aesthetic care and solid organ transplant coordination. Elena also hosts the Total Health Radio show, streamed across Micronesia and Oceania.

Elena also has an orphanage home in Uganda, where she helps children get an education to better their lives.

In her free time Elena enjoys scuba diving, mountaineering, kite surfing, sailing, surfing and co-piloting airplanes. A world traveler who has visited close to 100 countries, she collects shells and loves identifying birds, insects, fruits, animals, plants and stars, along with books, the arts, international cuisine and adventures of every kind. She has climbed to the base camp of Mount Everest in Nepal, K2 in Pakistan, and High Camp 3 on Mount Aconcagua.

Above all, Elena has a deep love for God. She is well acquainted with pain: growing up in a family with handicapped parents and little income, she feels she can mingle with people of every social status. She is passionate about helping others and believes that by doing so she can grow mentally, spiritually and emotionally, to be even more effective in helping those who need it most.

Our model

Train → Equip → Send → Mentor → Multiply

Every program moves people along one pathway, from first training to leading others, so local teams sustain care long after visiting teams go home.

  1. 01

    Train

Competency-based training in vision, oral health, diabetes and lifestyle medicine, built on simulation and supervised practice.

  2. 02

    Equip

Portable screening equipment, retinal imaging, dental instruments and a shared digital platform for local teams.

  3. 03

    Send

Trained health ambassadors, technicians and clinicians serve through Wellness Hubs, mobile outreach and telehealth.

  4. 04

    Mentor

Licensed professionals supervise, review cases and walk alongside local workers as they grow in skill.

  5. 05

    Multiply

Trainer-of-trainers pathways let communities that once received help equip others in turn.

Operation Wholeness Health

One mission, whole-person health

Mind, body, spirit and community. A vision or dental visit becomes a doorway to whole-person care: the same encounter can identify diabetes, neuropathy, vascular risk, nutrition needs or an addiction concern.

Operation Wholeness Health infographic: a wheel of eight health areas around a center of wholeness habitsView the Operation Wholeness Health infographic

Four centers under one roof

Each Wellness Hub integrates services that are usually fragmented, so they reinforce one another.

Vision Center
Visual-acuity screening, refraction, affordable glasses, retinal photography, diabetic-retinopathy screening and specialist referral.
Smile Center
Oral examination, prevention, dental hygiene within legal scope, oral-cancer awareness and referral for restorative care.
Lifestyle Center
Diabetes and NCD screening, diabetic-foot and neuropathy risk, nutrition, activity, and smoking and betel nut cessation.
Hope Center
Voluntary prayer, chaplaincy, counseling, Bible study and family support. Never a condition of receiving care.

Our approach

Culturally sensitive service, restorative ministry
